As this quote illustrates, it was the leaders of the militant groups who guaranteed the participation of their fighters in the amnesty and DDR programme, and, in some cases, the ‘fighters’ included freeloading youths who were not part of an armed group (Nwajiaku-Dahou 2012). This process tended to sustain the loyalty of ex-militants towards their leaders. An example of this loyalty can be seen in a response from an ex-militant fighter during an interview:

I would do what my leader tells me to do. Why not? He is my boss na … Yes. He is my boss; he is caring for me. He is caring for me more than the government. How much are they paying us? Is it not 65,000 naira? He is doing more than that. He started our journey in life to be somebody. Every leader you see, if he says, ‘My men, I want to see you today and this is what I want you to do’ … Why not?4
